THE MELODIANSTHE BEST OF THE MELODIANS
* * * /
1967-1974 - Trojan - studio - discs:1The Melodians are pure Rocksteady. In the mid 60's the Jamaican sounds started to slow down creating a new genre called Rocksteady. Tony Brevett (nephew of Lloyd Brevett from the Skatalites) started to perform at a very young age. Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton joined him quite soon. They started to record for Coxsone Dodd ("Lay It On", not in his compilation). Most of the time the songs released were self compositions but sometimes they associated with their long time friend Renford Cogle. After Coxsone they recorded for Duke Reid and this provided huge success. Later there were recordings for Sonia Pottinger. After came Leslie Kong. They stayed together up tp 1971 when they started to perform and record as solo artists. Their songs are one of the best contribution to the Rocksteady period and after forty years none of their tracks has lost quality or importance. The Melodians will always be remembered in the Jamaican musical history.
